How to choose a hospital in Morocco
A hospital is chosen on its clinical platform, on the heavy specialities present (intensive care, oncology, neurosurgery, interventional cardiology) and on the insurance arrangements that frame the admission. Each factor weighs differently depending on the medical situation.
Institutional status: private, public or university
Private hospitals such as Hopital International Cheikh Khalifa (HICK) in Casablanca and CHU Cheikh Zaid in Rabat sit alongside the public CHP (provincial hospitals), CHR (regional hospitals) and the public CHUs — Ibn Rochd (Casablanca), Ibn Sina (Rabat), Mohammed VI (Marrakech, Tangier, Oujda).
Availability of heavy clinical equipment
1.5T and 3T MRI, multidetector CT, dedicated neurosurgical theatres, cardiac catheterisation labs, linear accelerators for radiotherapy and adult, neonatal and paediatric intensive care units define the depth of a hospital's platform.
CNSS, CNOPS, AMO and complementary conventions
In the public sector RAMED has been replaced by AMO Tadamon since 2024. In the private sector the level of cover depends on the procedure and the complementary insurer; an admission estimate avoids surprises.
Team experience and procedure volume
Clinical outcomes correlate with the volume of procedures performed. Ask how many cases per year the team handles for the planned intervention — cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and oncology in particular.
24/7 emergency department and SAMU
For potentially serious situations a 24/7 emergency department connected to SAMU 15 (Morocco's emergency medical service), with a resuscitation bay, intensive care and an emergency theatre, is essential.
When to choose a hospital rather than a clinic or polyclinic
A hospital is not the default option. It is justified by situations that require its heavy platform and team.
Heavy pathologies and complex surgery
Cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement), neurosurgery (cerebral aneurysm, brain tumours, spinal surgery), thoracic surgery and renal or hepatic transplantation require the platform of a hospital.
Oncology and radiotherapy
Inpatient chemotherapy, external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy and oncological surgery are concentrated in a few centres — HICK, CHU Cheikh Zaid and the public CHU Ibn Rochd are the references.
Life-threatening emergencies and major trauma
Stroke, myocardial infarction with primary angioplasty, polytrauma, extensive burns and severe road traffic accidents need the depth that only a hospital can offer.
Neonatology and high-risk pregnancy
Severe pre-eclampsia, IUGR, foetal malformations and very preterm delivery (under 32 weeks) call for a level-III neonatal unit, available only in the major hospitals.
CNSS, CNOPS and AMO conventions in hospital settings
Reimbursement terms differ by institutional status and patient scheme. The financial stakes are higher than in outpatient care.
CNSS (private-sector employees)
Around 70 to 80 percent of the TNR tariff is reimbursed. When a long-term illness (ALD) is recognised — for example cancer, end-stage renal disease or severe heart disease — cover rises to 100 percent of the tariff.
CNOPS (civil servants)
Up to 90 percent reimbursement with higher ceilings on heavy procedures. A pre-authorisation request before admission is strongly recommended for elective hospitalisation.
AMO Tadamon and long-term illness (ALD)
The 2024 extension brought cancer, dialysis, transplantation and multiple sclerosis into Tadamon. The exact list of covered procedures should be confirmed with the ANAM (national health insurance agency).
Private complementary insurance
Saham, RMA, Atlanta, Wafa, AXA and Marocaine Vie can lift cover to 100 percent. Ask whether direct billing has been negotiated with the chosen hospital.
Public hospitals and uninsured patients
CHU, CHP and CHR apply regulated tariffs five to ten times lower than the private sector. ANAM and AMO Tadamon coordinate access for uninsured patients.
Indicative prices in private hospitals (2026)
Early-2026 figures in the private sector before reimbursement. Public hospital tariffs are five to ten times lower.
Inpatient day in a single room: 1,500 – 5,000 MAD
Inpatient day in intensive care: 3,000 – 8,000 MAD
Cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass graft): 80,000 – 150,000 MAD
Coronary angioplasty with stenting: 35,000 – 70,000 MAD
Neurosurgery (cerebral aneurysm, brain tumour): 60,000 – 150,000 MAD
Total hip replacement: 35,000 – 70,000 MAD
Day-hospital session for chemotherapy (admission fees only, excluding drugs): 1,500 – 4,000 MAD
Cost of cytotoxics or immunotherapies per cycle: highly variable — around 5,000 MAD for standard chemotherapy; 30,000 – 80,000 MAD per dose for modern immunotherapies (pembrolizumab, nivolumab). Confirm AMO Tadamon or complementary cover.
External beam radiotherapy (per session): 1,200 – 2,500 MAD
Dialysis session: 800 – 1,800 MAD
Complicated delivery or emergency caesarean section: 15,000 – 40,000 MAD
3T MRI with contrast injection: 2,500 – 4,500 MAD
Ask for an itemised quote that separates the procedure, the surgical fees, the inpatient stay, supplies and anaesthesia. Confirm pre-authorisation before admission so that the financial expectations are clear.
Differences between a private hospital, a public hospital and a CHU
Private hospital
For-profit institution with a complete platform, 100 to 400+ beds, freely set tariffs and standard CNSS / CNOPS conventions. Hopital International Cheikh Khalifa (HICK) in Casablanca is the reference.
Private university hospital
Combines care, teaching and research, with 200+ beds and equipment such as a surgical robot, PET-CT and a linear accelerator. The Hopital Universitaire International Cheikh Zaid (HUICZ) attached to the Universite Internationale de Rabat is an established example.
Public hospital and public CHU
Run by the Ministry of Health — CHP, CHR and CHU. Ibn Rochd (Casablanca), Ibn Sina (Rabat), Hassan II (Fez) and Mohammed VI (Marrakech, Oujda, Tangier) remain the references for heavy pathologies and medical training, with regulated tariffs and longer waiting times.
Hospitals in Morocco's main cities
Hospital capacity is concentrated along the Casablanca-Rabat axis and in the regional capitals.
Casablanca
Private: HICK is the reference for oncology and interventional cardiology. Public: CHU Ibn Rochd (around 3,000 beds historically, the largest CHU in Morocco), Hopital 20 Aout and Hopital Moulay Youssef cover the wider population.
Rabat-Sale-Temara
Private: HUICZ (attached to the Universite Internationale de Rabat). Public: CHU Ibn Sina groups the Hopital Ibn Sina, the Hopital des Specialites, the Hopital d'Enfants, the Maternite Souissi and the Centre National de Radiotherapie.
Marrakech
CHU Mohammed VI is attached to the Faculty of Medicine in Marrakech and groups Hopital Ibn Tofail and Hopital Ibn Nafis. The private offer is concentrated in Gueliz and Hivernage.
Tangier
CHU Mohammed VI Tangier opened in 2021 and is climbing the regional capacity ladder, alongside Hopital Mohammed V and Maternite Al Kortobi.
Agadir
CHU Agadir (Souss-Massa) is ramping up its activity. The private offer focuses on orthopaedics, obstetrics and regional oncology.
Fez, Meknes, Oujda and other cities
CHU Hassan II in Fez covers the north-east and CHU Mohammed VI serves the Oujda region. Each provincial capital adds one to three public hospitals and two to five private structures.
