Depakine est principalement indiqué, de préférence en monothérapie, dans les épilepsies généralisées primaires: petit-mal/absences, myoclonies massives bilatérales, grand-mal avec ou sans myoclonies, formes photosensibles. Depakine est également efficace, seul ou en association avec d'autres antiépileptiques dans les indications suivantes: Epilepsies généralisées secondaires, notamment syndrome de West et syndrome de Lennox-Gastaut. Epilepsies partielles à symptomatologie élémentaire ou à symptomatologie complexe (formes psychosensorielles, formes psychomotrices). Epilepsies secondairement généralisées. Formes mixtes (généralisées et partielles). Par ailleurs, Depakine, préparation injectable peut être utilisé dans le cadre de plans thérapeutiques bien définis chez l'adulte: en tant que produit de deuxième intention face à des crises convulsives généralisées («grand mal status») lorsqu'un traitement initial avec des benzodiazépines (traitement de première intention) n'a pas permis de mettre un terme aux crises; en tant que produit de première intention lors de crises non convulsives généralisées (status d'absence) comme traitement pouvant remplacer celui à base de benzodiazépines; en tant que produit de deuxième intention face à des crises convulsives et non convulsives (crises focales simples ou complexes) lorsqu'un traitement initial avec des benzodiazépines (traitement de première intention) n'a pas permis de mettre un terme aux crises.
